Alexandria Police Chief Michael L. Brown will participate in a community discussion next week on what a community police review board should look like.
The Alexandria City Council, last month, sent back the city manager’s initial proposal for the board. Council requested that there be an option to include an auditor/independent investigator with subpoena power.
The Agenda Alexandria conversation will be held on Monday, October 26 at noon. Brown will be accompanied by Sarah Graham Taylor, the city’s legislative director, who is drafting the proposal for council to consider. Additionally, panelists will include Ingris Moran of Tenants and Workers United and Jon Liss, co-executive director of New Virginia Majority
Brown previously said in June that such a review board has a negative connotation, and last month a police union called the board “superfluous“.
“I do not disagree with the concept of oversight,” Brown said. “I may be mincing words here, but a ‘review board’ as its phrased in our world, in policing, has a very negative connotation.”
