Alexandria voters face Friday deadline to register, request absentee ballots for Nov. election

Time is running out for Alexandria residents who need to register to vote or request an absentee ballot for the Nov. 4 general election. Both deadlines fall on Friday, Oct. 24, giving eligible voters just two days to take action.

The November general election will feature contests for Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, House of Delegates, Commonwealth’s Attorney, and Sheriff.

Early voting turnout has been significantly higher than in 2021, with 14,221 early votes cast as of Oct. 20 compared to 9,353 at the same point four years ago — a 52% increase, according to data from the Virginia Public Access Project.

Friday is the last day to register to vote or update an existing registration for the Nov. 4 election, the city announced. U.S. citizens living in Virginia who will be 18 or older by Election Day can register online at vote.elections.virginia.gov before midnight on Oct. 24, in person at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, by 5 p.m. on Oct. 24, or by mail with applications postmarked on or before Oct. 24.

Residents who have moved since their last vote should verify that their registration reflects their current address, the city said. Registration status can be checked at vote.elections.virginia.gov, by emailing [email protected], or by calling 703-746-4050.

Voters who miss Friday’s deadline still have options. Beginning Oct. 25, same-day registration will be available at early voting locations and on Election Day at assigned polling places, according to the city. However, individuals who register on the same day must cast a provisional ballot.

Friday at 5 p.m. is also the final deadline to request a by-mail ballot, the city said. All registered Virginia voters are eligible to vote by mail without providing a reason. Applications can be submitted online at vote.elections.virginia.gov, by downloading an application from alexandriava.gov/Elections, or by calling 703-746-4050 to request an application be mailed.

Once received, completed ballots must be returned to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. on Nov. 4, or postmarked by Nov. 4 and received by the office by noon on Friday, Nov. 7.

In-person early voting continues until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. All registered voters in Virginia are eligible to vote early in person. Alexandria residents can vote early at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with evening hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Oct. 27-30.

Starting Oct. 24, voters can also cast early ballots at Charles Beatley Jr. Central Library, 5005 Duke St., from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with extended hours until 7 p.m. from Oct. 27-30.

Ballot drop boxes will be available at all polling places on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A secure outdoor drop box under 24-hour video surveillance is located in front of the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 132 N. Royal St. and will be available through 7 p.m. on Nov. 4.
