Police find no explosives after bomb threat at Alexandria City High School

Alexandria police found no explosive devices after conducting a thorough search of Alexandria City High School following a bomb threat Monday morning, according to the department.

The threat was reported while the school was already closed to students in observance of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. Staff members who were present at the building were sent home as a precautionary measure, police said.

Police officers, including members of the department’s Homeland Security Section and K-9 unit, conducted the search. The department posted about the incident on X at 10:19 a.m., asking the public to avoid the area.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the building was closed earlier today while officers conducted the search,” police said in an update posted Monday. “We appreciate the cooperation of Alexandria City Public Schools staff and the community’s patience as we ensured everyone’s safety.”

Police initially posted about the incident at 10:17 a.m., but deleted that post and reposted with updated language specifying “possible” explosive devices.

No additional details about the nature of the threat or how it was received have been released.

Alexandria City High School, located at 4850 Seminary Road, is part of Alexandria City Public Schools, which observes Diwali as a school holiday. The closure meant no students were present when the threat was reported.

Separately, Fairfax City police reported a bomb threat at Fairfax High School on Monday morning. Officers were conducting a sweep of that school, with no students or faculty in the building.
