The Alexandria City Council will convene for a public hearing Saturday morning to consider several development projects and zoning ordinances, including two major residential conversion proposals in Old Town.
The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall, 301 King St., and is open to the public in person and virtually via Zoom.
Among the most significant items is a proposal to convert the office building at 601 Wythe St. into residential units. The project requires rezoning from Commercial-Downtown to Commercial Residential Mixed-Use, along with a special-use permit for multi-unit residential dwellings and an encroachment permit for upper-floor balconies. The Planning Commission recommended approval 7-0 on all three requests.
The council will also hear a request for a development special use permit for 6025 Duke St., known as WestEnd Block D, to construct a multi-unit residential dwelling with a parking reduction. The Planning Commission recommended approval as amended by a 6-0 vote.
Another major item involves an extension request for a previously approved development at 727 N. West St., also known as Braddock West Extension. The project would construct a multi-unit residential dwelling with ground-floor commercial space and includes requests for increased floor area ratio, bonus density for affordable housing, reduced parking requirements, and private club use. The Planning Commission recommended approval 6-0-1.
The council will also conduct second readings and final passage votes on several ordinances previously approved in September, including a rezoning of 3333 Helen St. from residential family to townhouse zoning, amendments to sign regulations to add provisions for a mural program, updates to environmental management regulations addressing coastal resilience and sea-level rise, and changes to penalties for fats, oils and grease management violations.
