Alexandria Police have cleared the scene in the 400 block of North West Street and reopened the area to traffic after finding no illegal amounts of hazardous materials, authorities announced Thursday evening.
The street closure, which had been in effect since late afternoon, was lifted around 8:09 p.m., according to a police social media update.
Earlier Thursday, Alexandria Police and Fire Marshal units had cordoned off the residential block “out of an abundance of caution” while investigating a report of potential hazardous materials at a residence in the area.
The 400 block of North West Street runs through Alexandria’s historic Old Town district. No additional details about what prompted the initial investigation or the nature of the materials examined have been released.
Traffic flow has returned to normal in the area.
