Alexandria to participate in Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week, Clean the Bay Day

Alexandria is set to celebrate Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week from June 7 to June 15, 2025.

The city plans to participate in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Clean the Bay Day, an annual event dedicated to preserving the bay’s ecosystem.

On June 10, the City Council will issue a proclamation during its Legislative Meeting to mark the occasion.

At the City Council Legislative Meeting on June 10, 2025, the Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week proclamation will be read affirming the City’s commitment to the Chesapeake Bay and its natural resources, and to continue performing maintenance activities, stream cleanups, and implementing capital projects to protect it.

Residents are invited to join a stream cleanup event on June 7 at Oronoco Bay Park. The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is organizing the event, which will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. City staff will provide the necessary equipment.

Those interested in participating should bring sunscreen, snacks, and water. It’s recommended to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Alexandria is also encouraging year-round actions to protect the bay. These include properly disposing of pet waste, reducing litter, and reducing lawn fertilizer use.

  • Keep pet waste out of the City’s storm drains by picking up and properly disposing of pet waste in a trash can. Pet waste can cause bacteria contamination in waterways.
  • Keep the City litter-free, as waste dropped on streets, sidewalks, or parks ends up in local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Reduce or eliminate fertilizer use on lawns. Excess fertilizer causes poor water quality. Consider applying for a ten percent Stormwater Utility Fee credit for the no-fertilizer pledge.
