Alexandria celebrates 30 graduates from its Spring 2025 City Academy program

Alexandria City Council celebrated 30 graduates from its Spring 2025 City Academy program at its Legislative Meeting on Tuesday (May 13).

Councilor John Taylor Chapman presented a proclamation honoring the graduates who completed a seven-week course. The program gives participants hands-on experience with city services and staff.

Chapman read from the proclamation, “The City Academy is a cornerstone in providing direct experience with city services and staff. It teaches participants how to make a lasting, positive impact in our community.”

Since its start in 2004, the program has welcomed about 1,200 participants and logged over 900 service hours. It now includes courses on public safety, adult and aging services, energy efficiency, and state and local government.

Nick Zazulia from the Office of Communications and Community Engagement commended the graduates’ commitment. He pointed out their dedication in setting aside two hours every Thursday evening for nearly two months.

“It says a lot about you and the city staff who spoke to you,” Zazulia said. “The time and effort you all put in to learn how to give back to the city is significant.”

Mayor Alyia Gaskins added, “We can’t be the inclusive, innovative, and creative city we want to be without your involvement. Your input is essential to our vision.”
