The City of Alexandria will be closing a portion of Old Town North to relocate a portion of a historic canal unearthed last month.
The Alexandria Canal operated from 1845-1886 and transported goods from Alexandria up to the C&O Canal in Georgetown. The canal fell into disuse and was eventually covered by new development, but a portion of the canal was recently discovered in Old Town North.
City is planning to relocate the Alexandria Canal stones from their current development site to an interim location in Montgomery Park. The plan is, eventually, for the stones to be re-used in a waterfront park.
According to the City website, N. Royal Street between Montgomery Street and First Street will close on or about:
- Friday, February 21
- Monday, February 24, through Friday, February 28
- Monday, March 3, through Friday, March 7
The closures are expected to run from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. with traffic detoured one block east.
