Planning for new Eisenhower Metro station park to kick off next year (or sooner)

A new park could be coming to the Carlyle neighborhood; built directly under the tracks at the Eisenhower Metro station

During a discussion last night of the FY 2026-2027 Long Range Planning Interdepartmental Work Program, city staff teased upcoming plans for a new park at the Eisenhower Metro station.

Staff said the Coordinated Development District for Eisenhower East identified the land under the tracks as the site for a future plaza. The city is currently working through finalizing agreements for access and development of the site but said “staff is excited to begin the community engagement process.”

Those agreements are set to be in place by FY 2027, but could start sooner.

According to a memo from Karl Moritz, director of Planning and Zoning:

The project will engage the community and WMATA to develop a plan for the park proposed under the Eisenhower Metrorail tracks as part of the Eisenhower East Small Area implementation. The planning process will begin in Winter 2026-27.

“I’m excited to see the work plan, particularly the park under the bridge,” said Council Member John Chapman. “I think that’s an amazing concept. When that area plan was done, that was something a number of us were excited to see. I’m glad to see that’s moving forward and hopefully we can get everyone on board to move that up.”
