
A man was killed by electrocution in Del Ray today while working in a tree with a chainsaw, according to dispatch reports.
The incident occurred at around 10:10 a.m. in the area of West Mount Ida Avenue and Hickory Street. The man was in the tree with a chainsaw when witnesses told the Alexandria Fire Department that he was electrocuted when a branch fell and hit a power line, according to dispatch.
The man was confirmed deceased at around 11:10 a.m. — an hour after the incident was first reported — and was removed from the tree at around 11:30 a.m.
The city said that the man was an arborist and that his identification is being withheld pending next of kin notification. The city released the following:
Alexandria emergency services this morning responded to a fatal incident involving an apparent electrocution on West Mount Ida Avenue.
The Alexandria Police and Fire Departments received the report at 10:09 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered an unresponsive arborist, whose preliminary investigation suggests was electrocuted when a tree branch he was trimming came into contact with a live power line.
Dominion Power was called to the scene to help eliminate the electrical hazard. However, despite the efforts, the worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Currently, detectives are in the process of notifying the victim’s next of kin about the tragic incident.
