The City of Alexandria is estimated to receive $124,334 over the next 11 years from grocery store chain Kroger as part of an opioid-related settlement.
Kroger will pay approximately $10.5 million to the Commonwealth of Virginia over the next 11 years as part of a $1.4 billion settlement in a lawsuit that alleged the supermarket’s pharmacies helped fuel the opioid epidemic.
A memo from City Attorney Cheran C. Ivery said accepting the terms of the settlement would be in the best interest of the City of Alexandria and the funding would go to support the City’s opioid remediation efforts.
The city has a strategic plan put together by the Opioid Work Group aimed at curtailing opioid abuse, including partnerships with ACPS and ensuring access to medication assisted treatment at places like Guest House, the jail and Inova Alexandria Hospital.
The City Council is scheduled to consider a resolution approving participation in the settlement at the Tuesday, June 25 meeting.
