The City of Alexandria will host an open house this Wednesday (May 22) to discuss one of the city’s largest flood mitigation projects.
The Commonwealth, Ashby, Glebe Flood Mitigation Project should provide flood mitigation for Lynhaven and the northern end of Del Ray.
“The proposed design includes new parallel relief sewers along Commonwealth Avenue and East Glebe Road, which will increase the capacity of the storm sewer system,” the city’s website said.
“Additionally, a new outfall will be installed to discharge flows to Four Mile Run.”
The flood mitigation project will also include new green infrastructure practices to provide a water quality benefit to the watershed.
The project is estimated to cost a total of $50 million. Construction is scheduled to start in summer 2026 and be completed by summer 2029.
The open house at the Leonard “Chick” Armstrong Recreation Center (25 W Reed Avenue) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. will offer a chance for the public to ask questions or voice concerns about the project.
