In a series of interviews, 7News spoke to state representatives around Virginia who expressed mixed feelings on the proposed Potomac Yard arena.
While City leaders and Gov. Glenn Youngkin were on stage supporting the proposal at an event last month in Potomac Yard, the proposal is yet to fully convince the Virginia General Assembly.
Some, like Democratic State Senator Suhas Subramanyam from Loudoun County, told 7News they see the economic benefit to the stadium, but aren’t sure the benefit will fully ripple across the state.
Like State Sen. Adam Ebbin, Subramanyam said more Metro funding is vital to getting support for the project.
Republican State Senator Glen Sturtevant from Richmond told 7News he was reticent to give Alexandria more state funding after earlier appropriations for the AlexRenew project to clean out sewer discharge into the Potomac River — a project, it should be noted, the state government required Alexandria to do.
Sturtevant also told 7News he would like to see requirements put in place to ensure teams playing there “respect the national anthem.”
