Alexandria’s City Council approved a resolution to back collective bargaining with local trade workers, the city said in a release.
The agreement is the third collective bargaining agreement — an negotiation between employers and a group of employees generally led by a union — in recent years.
Alexandria’s City Council ratified the agreement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees District Council 20, Local 3001.
“For more than a year, we’ve worked with our employee unions to reach agreements that provide an efficient and effective structure for resolution of benefits and workplace matters,” Mayor Justin Wilson said. “We are excited to sign today’s deal that covers more than 200 employees in six departments — all of whom now have direct representation to amplify their voices and collectively address concerns.”
The goal of the agreement is to provide competitive salaries for trade workers along with other benefits. The agreement is estimated to cost $3.2 million over a three-year term, including $2.5 million in base wages.
“This is another great moment for the City and our employees,” City Manager James Parajon said. “The collaboration throughout negotiations, the focus from both sides of the table on what is best for our employees, shows the level of importance this deal has on our workforce. We are proud to have reached this point.”
