Old Town Ice Cream Shop to Open for Breakfast to Support Youth Advocacy

The recently opened Jeni’s Ice Cream in Old Town (102 S. Patrick Street) is planning a special event for a good cause this weekend.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, Jeni’s is planning to open early to serve breakfast with a new “skillet cinnamon roll” ice cream — “with a dark caramel sauce [that] tastes like caramelized sugar on a hot skillet” — in celebration of Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.

The celebration may be new to Alexandria, but it’s the fourth year the company has celebrated the “holiday.” The company said 100% of the profits will go to DoSomething.org, a not-for-profit digital platform that aims to help people organize volunteer-driven efforts like donating jeans to homeless shelters or cleaning up cigarette butts.

In addition to the cinnamon roll ice cream, a flyer for the event suggests visitors try the coffee float — locally-roasted hot coffee with salty caramel ice cream — or the “cereal + milk” ice cream combo, combining wildberry lavender with honey vanilla bean ice cream.

The scoop shop will be open at 8 a.m. on Feb. 1 for the event.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
