The Alexandria City Council will consider raising the stormwater utility fee yet again.
Council, on Tuesday, will be presented a city staff proposal to increase the utility fee for locals from $294 to $308.70 for the bill due Nov. 15, and all bills thereafter.
A public hearing on the 5% increase will be held at City Hall on Saturday, April 15.
The fee ballooned in recent years to contend with rampant flooding, going from $140 to $280 in 2021, and then to its current rate of $294 last year.
How’s the money spent? According to the city:
Funds raised by the Stormwater Utility Fee go toward street sweeping; leaf pickup; operation and maintenance of public stormwater infrastructure and separate storm sewer system; stormwater quality initiatives; compliance with our  MS4 stormwater permit; plan review; and our flood management program.
Several Stormwater Infrastructure Projects are underway to help the City meet State and Federal MS4 stormwater mandates, while City Drainage and Flooding Projects mitigate drainage issues in problem areas. The City focuses on the use of  green infrastructure and other  stormwater best management practices (BMPs), and  stream channel maintenance and restoration strategies to address stormwater infrastructure concerns.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
