Last month, Alexandria’s guaranteed income pilot pushed forward into a new phase: 170 applicants (out of 4,149) were selected for the program, with payment scheduled to start in February.

The Alexandria Recurring Income for Success and Equity program (ARISE) will give the 170 participants $500 per month over a 24-month period. Participants must be City of Alexandria residents over 18 and must be at or below 50% of the area median income — for a single-family household, that means an annual income of $49,850.

Applicants selected for the program should start receiving checks by February, according to the city website.

“To gauge the result of this effort, the City will provide case management and engage a research partner,” Mayor Justin Wilson wrote in a newsletter. “Ultimately, the goal of the effort is to improve the economic stability of lower-income families. I am hopeful that the City can also glean lessons from this experiment to better guide how we administer other programs designed to alleviate poverty in the future.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
