A new development replacing a former Walgreens and a Burke & Herbert Bank is headed to City Council review with a strong endorsement from city staff.
The new development, called The Mansly, will change relatively little of the King Street-facing exterior. The most notable change being the white painted brick restored to Old Town’s iconic redder hue.
However, the development will fill in the rest of the lot behind the King Street frontage like a Tetris block — fitting 24 new multifamily units and 6,414 square feet of ground-floor commercial space into the property.
A staff report said the new development has notably “high-quality design and architectural character, including the adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of two historic buildings.”
The project will also bring new residential units to King Street, which the city has been working to encourage through zoning ordinances.
The development is scheduled for review at the Saturday, Sept. 17, City Council meeting (item 17).
