(Updated at 10:55 a.m.) Thanksgiving is just two days away, and much of the city government will be shutting down for the holiday.
On Thursday (Nov. 28), all city facilities and the Torpedo Factory will be closed. DASH bus service will not operate, but the King Street Trolley will still be running. The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be closed on Thursday except for its Kongs-giving event to make treat packages for animals in the shelter.
Also Thursday, parking meters will not be enforced. However, trash and recycling will still be collected.
On Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. The Charles Houston and Patrick Henry recreation centers will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The Torpedo Factory will also be open but all other city facilities will be closed.
Several grocery stores around Alexandria will be open on Thanksgiving Day until the afternoon.
- Giant grocery stores throughout the D.C. region will be open until 5 p.m.
- Harris Teeter stores, even the 24-hour locations, will close at 2 p.m.
- Safeway stores will close at 7 p.m.
Other grocery stores, like Trader Joe’s, MOM’s Organic Market, Aldi, BJ’s, and Costco will be closed, according to WTOP.
If you’re looking to pick up a turkey at the last minute, local restaurant group Alexandria Restaurant Partners is offering Thanksgiving meal bundles to take home at various locations.

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Resource Recovery: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of November 25, including Thanksgiving Day, November 28. On Thanksgiving Day, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 a.m., in order to clear routes early for the Annual Turkey Trot. The collection staff prefer to start earlier on Thanksgiving Day in order to spend Thursday evening and Friday with their families, rather than having all day Thursday off and working on Friday.
Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be closed for business on November 28, but will still host its annual “Kongs-giving” event, from noon to 1:30 p.m., to create special holiday treats for homeless animals. The shelter will be open on November 29, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with animal visitation beginning at noon.
Health Facilities:Â The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will close at noon on Wednesday, November 27, and will remain closed on November 28 and 29. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will close at noon on Wednesday, November 27, and will remain closed on November 28 and 29.
Historic Alexandria: All City of Alexandria museums will be closed on November 28. On November 29, all museums will be open during regular hours except for the Archaeology Museum (which will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and the Black History Museum (which will be closed). The Black History Museum will have special hours on December 1 for “Museum Shop Sunday,” from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, call 703.746.4554 or visit alexandriava.gov/ Historic.
Hotlines:Â All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703.746.5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703.746.4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703.746.3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703.746.5778, and the sexual assault hotline at 703.683.7273.
Libraries:Â All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on November 28 and 29. The Law Library (520 King St.) will close at noon on Wednesday, November 27, and will remain closed on November 28 and 29.
Parking:Â The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Thursday, November 28. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on November 28. All normal parking restrictions will be enforced on Friday, November 29.
Impound Lot:Â The City’s Impound Facility (5248 Eisenhower Ave.) will be closed on November 28 and 29.
Recreation and Art Centers:Â All City of Alexandria recreation and art centers, including Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers, and Torpedo Factory Art Center will be closed on November 28. On November 29, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All other recreation centers will be closed on November 29.
Schools:Â All Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed on November 27, 28 and 29.
State Offices:Â The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office will be open until noon on Wednesday, November 27, and will be closed on November 28 and 29. The Alexandria Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will close at noon on November 27, and will remain closed on November 28 and 29. The Department of Motor Vehicles office (2681 Mill Road) will be closed November 28, November 29 and November 30.
Transit:Â On Thursday, November 28, the Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) bus service will not operate, but the free King Street Trolley will operate on its regular schedule, from 10:30 a.m. to midnight, between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River Waterfront. On Friday, November 29, both DASH and the King Street Trolley will operate on their regular weekday schedules.
