Alexandria’s unemployment rate has been cut roughly in half since this time last year, the Virginia Employment Commission revealed in a recent report.
As of May 2021, Alexandria’s unemployment rate was 3.9%, with 3,814 residents filing claims. The city’s unemployment rate in 2020 was 8.1%, with 7,950 residents getting unemployment payments.
Alexandria’s 98,250 person Civilian labor force is roughly the same in number as it was this time last year.
For the week ending June 19, there were 135 initial (first-time) claims, down slightly from the previous week’s 157 claims. There were also 1,054 continued claims, which was a reduction from the 1,284 claims from the previous week.
Next door in Arlington, the unemployment rate in May 2021 was 3.1%, down from 5.8% in May 2020.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
