Employees at a local business fought off a knife-wielding robber at a restaurant near Potomac Yard on Sept. 1, and the 64-year-old suspect is being held without bond after police found him hiding under his mother’s bed.
Around 11:15 p.m., the suspect allegedly walked into the restaurant in the 3100 block of Richmond Highway holding a large hunting knife. Staff reported that he jumped on the front counter and demanded they open the register. Instead, the three employees threw things at the suspect and injured him with a large grill scraper, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.
Video surveillance showed the suspect walk in holding a large hunting knife, jump on the counter and wave the knife around. The suspect was wearing a green beanie, a dark-colored New Balance shirt, a black mask, light-colored pants and light-colored shoes.
“The male said, ‘Imma kill you, open the register, gimme the money,'” the Alexandria Police Department recounted, according to the affidavit. “The employees fought off the suspect’s attempts to rob the business by throwing things at him and swinging a large grill scraper at him.”
APD said the suspect was “heavily bleeding” and fled on foot. An APD K-9 officer followed a blood trail four blocks to a home in the 300 block of Hume Avenue, where they found the suspect, Stanley Tirone Rivers, “hiding under his mother’s bed,” according to the affidavit.
Rivers was placed in handcuffs and transported by medics to Inova Alexandria Hospital. He was charged the next day with attempted robbery with a weapon, a Class 5 felony punishable by one to 10 years in prison. He’s scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 9.
Eight days after the incident, on Sept. 9, Rivers was found guilty of committing petit larceny for an unrelated incident on July 22. Rivers was given a suspended sentence of 45 days in jail, according to court records.
Rivers also goes to court on Oct. 28 for an assault and battery charge, stemming from an arrest in June.
