Alexandria will soon be training its 2,000 city employees on how to use artificial intelligence in local government.
The city recently announced a new partnership with InnovateUS to train city employees on AI tools, including data compilation and management. The two-part on-demand AI training series is designed to help employees “build confidence and competency in the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence,” a city spokesperson told ALXnow.
The two courses run a half hour apiece and are fully integrated into the city’s Learning Management System, making it easy for staff to access and complete at their own pace, according to the city.
“AI technology is here to stay, and our staff deserves to be equipped to use it well. It won’t replace the people doing this work, but it can help them do it better, make smarter use of public resources, and use data more efficiently,” acting deputy city manager Vanetta Pledger said in a statement. “What excites me most is how AI helps us see the connections across City government so we can build a workforce that’s more efficient, more equitable, and better prepared to serve our community.”
Alexandria’s AI initiatives include Smart Detection AI-enabled roadway assessment technologies, using AI to reconcile disparate data models across departments, and participating in the first cohort of the AI Learning and Innovation Hub, the city said in a release.
“The City also maintains AI acceptable use policies through the Department of Information Technology Services, including AI security training,” the city said.
The first course introduces employees to the “responsible and effective use of large language models.”
“It explains how these tools work, outlines the range of AI models available today, and provides practical government‑focused use cases,” a city spokesperson told ALXnow in a follow-up email. “The course also offers tips and techniques to help staff get more acquainted with the capabilities of AI.”
The second course looks into the risks and responsibilities that come with AI adoption, highlighting data protection, security practices, ethical use and social responsibility.
“Together, these modules are designed to strengthen employees’ understanding of how to use AI safely while still unlocking productivity gains,” the city said.
