Memorial Day weekend closures and schedule changes announced in Alexandria

The City of Alexandria and other agencies serving the city have announced closures and other schedule changes for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed Memorial Day (Monday, May 25). The city will co-host a Memorial Day ceremony with the Friends of Rocky Versace at the Captain Rocky Versace Plaza & Vietnam Veterans Memorial outside the Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Avenue). The ceremony runs from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and honor Versace, a posthumous Medal of Honor recipient, 68 Alexandrians who died in the Vietnam War, and others who have served in the military or are missing in action.

Other closures include Alexandria City Public Schools, Alexandria General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, the Clerk of Circuit Court, Alexandria Library, the Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center and the  Teen Wellness Center clinics.

The city’s outdoor pools — Memorial Pool, Warwick Pool and Old Town Pool, plus the Potomac Yard Park Interactive Fountain — will open for the season Saturday, May 23 and remain open on Memorial Day.

Memorial Pool at Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe Street) will be open 10 a.m.–4:45 p.m. May 23-25. Warwick Pool (3301 Landover Street) will be open 1 p.m.-5:45 p.m. on May 23-24 and 10 a.m.-4:45 p.m. on May 25. Old Town Pool (1609 Cameron Street) will be open 12-7:45 p.m. May 23-24 and 10 a.m.-4:45 p.m. May 25. The free Potomac Yard Park Interactive Fountain (2501 Potomac Avenue) will be open daily from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

Nova Parks’ Great Waves Waterpark at Cameron Run Regional Park (4001 Eisenhower Avenue) will also open for the season, with hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 23–25.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open 1-5 p.m. May 25. All other Historic Alexandria museums will be closed. City recreation facilities and nature centers will also be closed. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Parking enforcement will be suspended in metered spaces and residential permit parking districts May 25. The city’s impound lot will be closed May 23-24, and fees will accrue on Saturday and Sunday but not Memorial Day.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will lift most highway work zones and temporary lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia from noon Friday, May 22 to noon Tuesday, May 26. Holiday travelers can use VDOT’s travel trends map to see historic data on when highways and interstates become the busiest over Memorial Day weekend.

DASH bus service will operate on a weekend schedule, and Lines 102, 103 and 104 will not run. Metro riders should be aware that trains will single-track between East Falls Church and Ballston on the Orange and Silver Lines for track work May 23-24.

City trash and recycling pickups will be delayed by one day during the week of May 25. The Household Hazardous Waste Electronic Collection Drop-off Center will be closed May 25.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will be closed May 25. Animal emergencies or wildlife concerns can still be reported to the police non-emergency line at 703-746-4444.
