Alexandria nonprofit Community Lodgings has won a $73,000 grant from D.C.-based philanthropic organization Many Hands, Inc.
After a months-long application process that included an in-person presentation from applicants, Many Hands awarded $73,000 each to Community Lodgings, AfriThrive Inc., and DC Greens. It also awarded $100,000 to the D.C.-based School Justice Project, for $319,000 in total donations. There were 88 applicants for the organization’s annual grants.
Community Lodgings helps homeless and low-income families get back on their feet with affordable housing, transitional housing and education programs. The nonprofit announced on Facebook that the funding will help it to “continue providing academic support, mentoring, mental health services, tutoring, and college/career readiness opportunities for students and families; creating safe spaces where children can learn, grow, and thrive.”
“We’re honored and grateful to share that Community Lodgings has been awarded $73,000 #ManyHandsDC Partner Grant to support our Youth Education Program serving the Arlandria-Chirilagua community in Alexandria,” Community Lodgings said.
Many Hands has 270 members who pooled their annual donations for the $319,000 in grants. Since 2003, it has provided $3.8 million to local nonprofits serving women, children and families in need.
“Many Hands and our grantmaking represent the power of our members coming together to create meaningful and lasting change in the greater DC area,” said Charis Keitelman, president of Many Hands. “We are confident that all our grantees will continue to improve the lives of women, children, and families in socioeconomic need across the Washington region. We are proud to support the critical work they do every day.”
Community Lodgings has received considerable attention recently. The nonprofit raised more than $43,000 in last month’s Spring2ACTion nonprofit fundraiser and was named the 2025 Overall Business of the Year by the Chamber ALX.
