Activities in Alexandria this Mother’s Day weekend include bouquet making, painting

There are a variety of activities and events to take part in with loved ones this Mother’s Day weekend.

From themed bouquet making and painting to historical tours and live music, there’s something in store for all kinds of interests. Here’s the latest going on in the Port City from Friday, May 8, through Mother’s Day this Sunday, May 10.

Friday

Grown-Up Field Trip with the Alexandria Black History Museum

When: 6:30-8 p.m.
Where:
Archives and Records Center, 801 S. Payne Street
What: The fourth in a series of discussions with the museum. This final presentation highlights African American stories from Alexandria’s Archives and Records Center

Time in the Wilderness, PsychoPomP, and BLAUDiSS

When: 7:30-10:30 p.m.
Where: Galactic Panther Art Gallery, 1303 King Street
What: “Please join us for [an] evening of sublime, horn-forward bands equal parts jam band, jazz-rock fusion, and electronic.”

Live music at Lost Boy Cider

What: “Whether you’re here to relax, sing along, or dance it out, Friday nights are better with music and cider.”

Yoga on the Magnolia Terrace

When: 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.
Where: Carlyle House Historic Park, 121 N. Fairfax Street
What: “A gentle flow yoga class. We will build heat with sun salutations then progress to balance, deep stretching and finally relaxation. Please bring water, a towel, and a yoga mat.”

Del Ray House and Garden Tour

When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Del Ray Farmers Market, 2311 Mount Vernon Avenue
What: The self-guided tour is a biennial project of the Del Ray Citizens Association, serving as a fundraiser for scholarships and neighborhood projects.

Mother’s Day Sip and Paint

When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue
What: “Join us for an afternoon of creativity, relaxation, and celebration as we honor mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures in our community. Guests will enjoy guided painting instruction in a fun and welcoming atmosphere, and no experience is needed! Sip on refreshing beverages, connect with friends and create a beautiful keepsake to take home.”

Specialty Tour: Peeling Back the Layers

When: 11 a.m. to noon
Where: Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, 134 N. Royal Street
What: Explore Gadsby’s Tavern Museum top to bottom, including spaces rarely opened to the public, and understand how the buildings have changed over time.
Tickets: $12 for Historic Alexandria members, otherwise $15

Four Mile Run Kayak Launch Ribbon Cutting

When: noon to 3 p.m.
Where: Four Mile Run Park, 3700 Commonwealth Avenue
What: Celebrate the grand opening of the new kayak launch at Four Mile Run Park. The launch becomes part of the City of Alexandria’s 49-acre Four Mile Run Park, and it is the first of its kind in the DC metro area, featuring a raised boardwalk ramp and gangway with ADA-compliant slopes, a wheelchair transfer platform, and a roller water entry/exit ramp, providing increased safety while launching and landing, particularly helpful for unassisted or novice paddlers.

Art in the Attic Pop-up Market

When: 6-10 p.m.
Where: Madison Street Tattoo, 1012 Madison Street
What: Expect bold art, strange finds, and artists doing things their way in this pop-up market. Shop handmade goods, original art, prints, patches, zines, apparel, and more from local artists. Meet the makers, connect with fellow weirdos, and support independent creatives who keep the scene alive.

Love You A Bunch: Mother’s Day Victorian Bouquet Making

When: 2-4 p.m.
Where: Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden, 614 Oronoco Street
What: “Celebrate Mother’s Day surrounded by nature, florals, and feminine history. The two hour event will include a mini-lecture on Victorian Flower Language, followed by a bouquet making workshop. Participants will choose focal flowers, filler flowers, greenery, and wrapping materials to create their unique arrangements.”
Tickets: $40 for two, $10 for extra participant

Live Music Sunday at the Schlesinger Concert Hall 

Who: Side-By-Side: Stewart Goodyear Plays Gershwin
When: 3-4 p.m.
Where: Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall, 4915 E. Campus Drive
What: “Program includes Hymn for Everyone by Jessie Montgomery, Piano Concerto in F by George Gershwin featuring soloist Stewart Goodyear, and Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky.”
