Alexandria leaders remember former ADC Chair Susan Bulkley Kellom

Alexandria leaders are mourning the death of Susan Bulkley Kellom, a longtime city resident, veteran, volunteer and former chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee. Kellom died on Saturday, April 11 at age 78. Her cause of death has not been disclosed.

Kellom moved to Old Town in 1983 with her husband, Ben, who died in 2021 at the age of 90. She was ADC chair from 1999 to 2010, chair of the Alexandria Electoral Board from 2012 to 2014, former chair of the city’s Human Rights Commission and member of the Youth Policy Commission. Kellom also served as a military police officer and was in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1980.

A number of former and current city officials are remembering Kellom as a force of nature.

“She was a fixture in our family for as long as we can remember,” former Mayor Justin Wilson shared on Facebook. “She served our nation in uniform and our community in so many ways, big and small. She will be missed, but she is back with her beloved Ben.”

Del. R. Kirk McPike (D-5) said that Kellom was one of the first people he met when he joined the ADC.

“Many people tonight are referring to her as a force of nature, and if anything it’s an understatement,” McPike said. “I always appreciated her advice and support. She will be missed by her friends, her family, and Democrats across Alexandria and the Commonwealth.”

City Councilman Canek Aguirre said he was saddened to learn of Kellom’s death.

“She was a stalwart of the Democratic party and will be greatly missed,” Aguirre said. “My sincere condolences to Susan’s family and all who loved her.”

Councilwoman Jacinta Greene called Kellom a force in Alexandria politics and an advocate for women’s rights.

“You would never imagine telling her no, that would not be wise,” Greene said. “I am thankful to have worked with her on many key initiatives, campaigns and projects in our beloved Alexandria. I am forever grateful for her empowering me to lead, her unwavering support and for being an amazing friend.”

Funeral details have not yet been announced.
