Public hearing on Duke Street and W. Taylor Run intersection planned tonight

Alexandria is holding a public hearing tonight (Tuesday) on its plan to improve safety at a high-crash location on Duke Street while reducing neighborhood cut-through traffic.

The Duke Street and West Taylor Run Intersection Project has been in the design stage since 2024, with construction estimated to occur in 2027 and 2028. The final design of the project will wrap up this year, according to the city.

Planning for the project started in 2019 and includes:

  • Wider sidewalks, pedestrian signals and refuge areas along W. Taylor Run Parkway
  • A new left-turn lane and ramp connecting eastbound Duke Street to the existing southbound Telegraph Road on-ramp (east of the Telegraph Road bridge)
  • A widened and extended concrete median between eastbound Duke Street and the existing southbound Telegraph Road on-ramp (south of the West Taylor Run Parkway intersection) for future bus rapid transit station

The intersection project is funded by the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Smart Scale Program and is being planned in coordination with the Duke Street Transitway (bus rapid transit) project.

“The intersection of Duke Street and West Taylor Run Parkway has been studied for several years and was identified as a high-crash location through the City’s Vision Zero Program,” the city said. “At the same time, the City was planning the Duke Street Transitway project. The intersection improvements are being coordinated with that long-term vision to ensure the projects work together.”

The matter of the access road near the Duke Street and W. Taylor Run intersection proved to be a controversial part of the project. In November 2024, City Council approved a compromise — a one-way conversion between West Taylor Run Parkway and Cambridge Road, leaving a two-way street east of Longview Drive.

Tuesday’s meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the city’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services office at 2900 Business Center Drive. Comments can also be submitted online by April 17.
