Live music, bar crawls and more coming to Alexandria for St. Patrick’s Day

Alexandria’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade may have come and gone, but there are plenty more festivities coming to Alexandria celebrating the Emerald Isle.

Across the city, upcoming events include multiple bar crawls, live performances of Irish music and a feline-friendly “St. Catrick’s Day” at Mount Purrnon Cat Café + Wine Bar.

Here’s how some groups and businesses in Alexandria are planning to mark the holiday, which falls on Tuesday next week.

Festivities at Murphy’s Grand Irish Pub

When: Now through Sunday, March 15

The Irish pub has a countdown of festivities leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, including Irish dancers at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The celebration also includes several live music acts and the Ireland vs. Scotland rugby match at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Live music, rugby watching at Daniel O’Connell’s Irish Restaurant & Bar

When: Daily live music this weekend; traditional Irish music on Monday, March 16

The Irish pub’s weekly series of traditional Irish music returns from 7-10 p.m. Monday night. The pub will also show rugby games over the weekend, in addition to hosting musical acts Kenny Kohlhaas, Practically Einstein and Ian Conor from Friday through Sunday, according to the pub’s calendar.

Mike Rook Richards and Driven to Clarity are set to perform on St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Paddy’s Day Celebration at Hops N Shine

When: 6-10 p.m. Friday, March 13

Hops N Shine promises “great vibes, good company, and plenty of green” to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Entry is free, and green apparel is encouraged.

Gustave Art & Craft Market

When: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14

This market at Gustave Boulangerie and Bier Garden is returning with “a special St. Patrick’s Day celebration.” The venue will have a Six Nations Rugby watch party as Ireland plays Scotland, along with a halftime raffle for an Irish rugby jersey. At noon, kids can make their own leprechaun hat.

‘St. Catrick’s Day’ Weekend at Mount Purrnon Cat Café + Wine Bar

When: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14 through 6 p.m. March 15

Alexandria’s cat cafe and wine bar is calling it “St. Catrick’s Day,” with plans to serve festive specials throughout the weekend.

“We will have food and drink specials all weekend, including Irish beer, Irish grilled cheese sandwiches, and green sparkling wine!” the business says online.

Tickets aren’t required, but reservations are encouraged for the cat lounge. Saturday from 6-8 p.m. is exclusively for guests 18 and up.

Shamrock Smash Bar Crawl

When: 12-6 p.m. Saturday, March 14

The bar crawl through Del Ray includes nearly a dozen spots for guests to try specials like “Irish-themed snacks” and stouts while collecting limited-edition pins. “Swag bags” with special merchandise will be reserved for the first 200 registrants. Some brewery locations will host a “keg kicker” contest with prizes for the lucky guests who order the final pour.

Proceeds from registration will be donated to nonprofit Cook for Vets, which provides meals to local veterans.

Mount Vernon Avenue 

St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Bar Crawl

When: 1-8 p.m. Saturday, March 14

This crawl through Old Town features food and drink specials across venues like Good Fortune and Don Taco. A $30 general admission or $24 group rate for at least four people comes with two or three drinks, an after-party and no cover charge at participating restaurants. Guests can also snag some St. Patrick’s Day beads “while supplies last.” Check in starts at 1 p.m. at the Alexandria Bier Garden.

Shamrock Stampede Bar Crawl

When: 2-6 p.m. Saturday, March 14

This sixth annual Carlyle bar crawl invites “all Irish jig leprechauns, four-leaf clover wearers, Irish lovers, those with green clothes and who love green beers.”

Sweet Fire Donna’s, Tequila & Taco, Gin Ramen and Theismann’s Restaurant & Bar are participating in the $10 crawl, which will have themed cocktails, party favors, outfit contests and giveaways. Proceeds from the event will be donated in full to ALIVE!

An Evening of Irish Music at The Lyceum

When: 7-9 p.m., Saturday, March 14

This concert benefitting the Office of Historic Alexandria features The Irish Breakfast Band. The group “brings together 15 or more musicians, blending fiddles, flutes, guitars, drums, pipes, and vocals to create an unforgettable authentic Irish music experience,” according to the City of Alexandria.

Beer and wine will be available alongside free snacks. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and $5 for kids 17 and under.

201 S. Washington Street

St. Patrick’s Port City 5K and 10k

When: 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17

This yearly St. Patty’s Day run starts and ends near Port City Brewing, taking participants along Holmes Run for some scenic views. The 10K kicks off at 5:30 p.m., with the 5K starting 30 minutes later. Runners are awarded with a finisher medal and a brew from Port City.

Proceeds go toward Warriors Ethos, a nonprofit that provides career assistance to service members, veterans and their families.
