Adopt-a-Park program kicking off in Alexandria with celebration next week

Alexandria’s annual Adopt-a-Park program is returning this spring, bringing community groups together to beautify the city’s parks and open spaces.

The program is kicking off with a celebration hosted by the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities from 6-7:30 p.m. next Wednesday, March 18 at 2900 A Business Center Drive. The event is an opportunity for applicants and groups to connect with fellow volunteers, meet city staff, review updated procedures, get supplies and ask questions about the program.

“Whether you are a returning group or new to the program, this is your chance to start the season informed, connected, and inspired,” the city said in a release. “Light refreshments will be provided. We look forward to celebrating the start of a new season with you!”

Adopt-a Park is operated with support from Virginia’s Litter Prevention and Recycling Grant and the City of Alexandria. Program participants monitor and clean their assigned park at least once per week from April 1 through Nov. 30. Any RPCA-managed park or green space is eligible to adopt.

Volunteers and groups can win performance-based monetary awards the following year.

“City officials inspect parks monthly from April through November, scoring up to 12 points across paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum,” according to the city. “Deductions occur for litter, missed weeks, or no logs. Seasonal points and park size determine monetary awards from available grant funds.”

Participating groups “frequently use the award funds for park improvements such as benches, additional play equipment, drinking fountains, and landscaping,” according to the city.

Applications are available on the city website. Parks are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and may only be adopted by one group at a time, according to a city release.

Adopt-a-Park does not include parks or green spaces that are slated for redevelopment during the program period.
