A child care center is slated to be part of the future WestEnd development replacing the former Landmark Mall.
Tierra Encantada, a Spanish immersion day care, confirmed to ALXnow that it will open at the WestEnd Alexandria development.
Washington Business Journal had reported that the day care was targeted for the Aspect, a pair of residential buildings with 146 and 244 units planned for Blocks E1 and G of the development (5801 Duke Street).
The Tierra Encantada opening is targeted for the second quarter of 2028.
“We chose this location because the West End development is a vibrant, growing community that aligns perfectly with our mission,” franchise owner Zargham Amid told ALXnow. “We are excited to bring our Spanish immersion curriculum to Alexandria and provide local families with high-quality early childhood education in a convenient, community-focused setting.”
Tierra Encantada already has an Alexandria location at 4401 Ford Avenue as well as one in Arlington’s Ashton Heights neighborhood and Falls Church’s West Falls development. According to the day care’s website, its Spanish immersion program “allows children to learn Spanish naturally, the way they learn English at home, so they leave our program bilingual.”
No other retail tenants have been announced for Blocks E1 and G, part of the WestEnd development’s first phase. A December 2025 pre-construction presentation said the groundbreaking on E1 and G blocks was planned for early 2026, with completion aimed for late 2027.
Retail will make up 60,000 square feet of the two blocks, where Washington Business Journal reported the developer is seeking neighborhood-serving retail and restaurants.
The WestEnd development is a 4 million square foot mixed-use redevelopment of the former 52-acre Landmark Mall site at 5801 Duke Street. The development is a joint venture between Foulger Pratt, Howard Hughes Corp. and Seritage Growth Properties that began in 2019.
The WestEnd development will be anchored by Inova Alexandria Hospital, which will relocate from its Seminary Road location. Inova Health System projected a 2028 opening for the new hospital.
