Alexandria police have charged a 26-year-old man with murder in connection with a fatal shooting Saturday night in the West End.

Damontie James of Alexandria has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to a news release from the Alexandria Police Department. He is in custody.

Police said James shot and killed 29-year-old Kory Anding of Alexandria during a domestic dispute involving his sister.

Officers responded to 3450 Berkeley Street at approximately 10:56 p.m. Saturday for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered Anding deceased inside the apartment. James remained on the scene and was immediately detained, according to the news release.

The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Police initially investigated the incident as a shooting before upgrading it to a homicide investigation early Sunday morning. At that time, police said the incident appeared to be domestic-related and all parties involved were believed to be accounted for.

The investigation remains open. Anyone with information is asked to contact APD Detective Escobar at 703-746-6819. Tips can be provided anonymously.
