The Alexandria City High School football team couldn’t overcome a second-quarter deficit in a 21-20 home loss to West Potomac on Friday night, ending their perfect start to the season.
The Titans fell to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Virginia High School League Division 6A District 4 after failing to score in a scoreless fourth quarter.
After a scoreless first quarter, West Potomac exploded for 21 points in the second quarter while Alexandria City answered with 14. The Titans cut the deficit to 21-20 with six points in the third quarter but couldn’t find the end zone in the final period.
West Potomac improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in district play with the victory.
Alexandria City had opened the 2025 season with five consecutive victories, including a 71-0 rout of Lewis on Sept. 19 and a 23-21 road win at Woodson on Sept. 26.
The loss drops the Titans into a tie with Lake Braddock atop the district standings at 2-1. West Springfield leads the district at 4-0 with a 5-2 overall record.
Alexandria City has outscored opponents 198-88 this season. The Titans opened their campaign with a 32-0 forfeit victory over Lake Braddock, followed by wins against Potomac Senior (42-6) and Crossland (42-8).
The Titans travel to Fairfax on Friday at 7 p.m., then return home for homecoming against Robinson on Oct. 24. Alexandria City closes the regular season with a Senior Night home game against West Springfield on Oct. 31 and a road game at South County on Nov. 7.
