Alexandria activist group plans 1,200-person protest along Route 1 as part of national ‘No Kings’ movement

About 1,200 people are expected to line the sidewalks of Route 1 on Saturday, Oct. 18, as part of a national day of protests targeting the Trump administration, according to organizers.

The “Hands Across Alexandria” demonstration will run from 9:30 to 11 a.m. along northbound Route 1 between Powhatan Park and Potomac Yard, Indivisible Do Something Alexandria announced Tuesday.

The event is part of what organizers are calling the second “No Kings Day of Action,” a series of coordinated protests scheduled across the country.

“As the Trump regime continues to assault our Alexandria community — disappearing immigrant neighbors, villainizing federal workers and crushing free speech — we are lining the street to loudly and fearlessly declare that there are No Kings in America,” said Tess McEnery, a spokesperson for the group.

Organizers have invited city councilors, state delegates, and congressional representatives to meet constituents along the route, according to a press advisory.

The first No Kings Day of Action took place on June 14. Organizers claim that more than 5 million people participated in protests across all 50 states, calling it the largest single-day protest against President Trump’s policies.

The group stated that all No Kings events adhere to a commitment to nonviolent protest and community safety. Organizers said they are coordinating with local partners to ensure peaceful demonstrations.
