ACPS to induct 13 individuals, three teams into Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday

Alexandria City Public Schools will honor 13 individuals and three athletic teams at its 2025 Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Alexandria City High School.

The ceremony, scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the King Street campus auditorium, will recognize 11 athletes, one coach, and one administrator who have made significant contributions to high school athletics in Alexandria.

This year’s individual inductees are Ron Bass (football and track & field), Alfred Carter (football), Tracye Funn (track & field), Maija Garnaas (soccer and tennis), Mary Higgins (crew), Maria Lovelace (track & field), Marty Nickley (coach, varsity soccer), John Porter (ACPS administrator), Mike Porterfield (football, wrestling, rowing), Angela Russell (track & field), Tony Suggs (boxing), Greg Wright (basketball, football, track & field) and Gary Wyatt (cross country and track).

The ceremony will also honor three teams: the 1947 George Washington High School Baseball Team, which won the Virginia State Championship; the 1979 ACHS Boys Indoor Track Distance Medley Relay Team, which set a national high school record of 10 minutes and 15.4 seconds at the U.S. Naval Academy; and the 1979 Boys T.C. Williams VHSL State Indoor Track & Field Champions, the first state championship team in school history.

Since its inception in 2014, the ACPS Athletic Hall of Fame has recognized 117 individual athletes or coaches and nine teams across multiple sports.

The event will include remarks from ACPS Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt, School Board Vice Chair Christopher Harris, ACHS Acting Executive Principal Lance Harrell, and other officials.
