Final Family Day at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum set for Sunday

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum will host its final Family Day with Young Historians of the summer season on Sunday, Aug. 31, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The interactive program at 134 N. Royal Street features Junior Docents — students in grades four through seven — who lead museum tours and share stories of early Alexandria. Activities include chocolate making and period clothing demonstrations.

The hands-on activities are included with regular museum admission, which is free for residents of Alexandria. Tickets can be reserved at https://shop.alexandriava.gov/Events.aspx.

“Visitors from past years have praised the Junior Docents’ enthusiasm and unique perspective as an ‘exciting treat’ that adds a ‘fun element’ to the tour,” according to the museum.

Through the museum’s objects and activities, families learn how Alexandria connected to the world and discover stories of the diverse people who lived and worked in the historic city.

Gadsby’s Tavern served as the center of social and political life in Alexandria and the new Federal City of Washington during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The tavern was a premier gathering place for residents, including George Washington, and visitors.

Tavern keepers John Wise and John Gadsby hosted balls, performances, and meetings, with accommodations known as among the best by travelers.

The museum is owned and operated by the city. For more information, call 703-746-4242 or visit alexandriava.gov/Gadsbytavern.
