Fox tests positive for rabies in Alexandria’s Del Ray/Rosemont area

Health officials issued a rabies alert Friday after a fox in Alexandria’s Del Ray/Rosemont neighborhood tested positive for the virus following contact with a domestic cat.

The Alexandria Health Department said the fox encountered the cat on Monday near a home in the area. The fox died, and officials are working with the cat’s owner on safety measures.

The positive test increases the risk of rabies exposure in the community, health officials said.

Residents should call Alexandria Animal Control at 703-746-4444 if they observe animals exhibiting symptoms of rabies. Those concerned about potential exposure should contact the Alexandria Health Department at 703-746-4910 during business hours.

Officials warn against feeding or approaching wild, stray, or feral animals, even if they appear friendly or appear to be injured. Pet owners should ensure dogs and cats have current rabies vaccinations. Dogs must be leashed in all public areas and parks.

Rabies is a preventable but fatal viral disease spread through saliva from bites or scratches by infected animals.

Symptoms in animals include unexpected aggression from normally timid creatures, excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth, and coordination problems resembling intoxication or unusual lethargy.
