Alexandria to begin Duke Street repaving, Mt. Vernon Bridge work

Two major road construction projects will begin early next week, affecting traffic on Duke Street and the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge, city officials announced Friday.

Nighttime milling and paving work on Duke Street between Roth Street and Wheeler Avenue is scheduled to begin Sunday, weather permitting. The roadwork will occur Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to minimize traffic impacts. No work is planned Sunday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, due to the Labor Day holiday.

Beginning Monday, construction crews also will start demolition on the median of the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge across Four Mile Run. The middle lanes on the bridge will close, reducing traffic from four lanes to two lanes for about two weeks.

During bridge work, the entrance to Four Mile Run Park and the north driveway of Mount Vernon Plaza will be right-turn only for entrance and exit. The south driveway of Mount Vernon Plaza will remain unchanged.

Crews also are conducting duct bank installation work on the bridge and at the intersection of Arlington Ridge Road and South Glebe Road through early to mid-September. Pedestrian detours will be clearly marked with signs.

Drivers should expect periodic lane closures and potential delays during work hours for both projects. Officials urge motorists to remain alert while sharing the road with crews.

The Duke Street project is expected to last two weeks, though schedules for both projects may change due to weather conditions, equipment issues, other city projects or utility work coordination.
