Alexandria firefighters help rescue driver trapped under tractor-trailer on Beltway

Alexandria firefighters responded to a serious motor vehicle accident on the Capital Beltway near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge early Sunday morning, rescuing a driver who became trapped underneath a tractor-trailer.

The accident occurred just before 6 a.m. on the Maryland side of the bridge, according to a Facebook post from Alexandria Firefighters, Inc. IAFF Local 2141. When crews arrived, they found one vehicle pinned under the rear of the tractor-trailer with the driver trapped inside.

Rescue Squads 209 and 406 began extrication efforts to free the victim. The incident commander requested additional assistance from a DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services rotator to help with the rescue operation.

Once the crews successfully freed the trapped driver, Alexandria Medic 205 transported the patient to a local trauma center. The driver’s current condition is unknown.

Multiple units responded to the incident, including Engines 205, 201, and 411; Rescues 209, 406, and 109; Medic 205; and Battalion 201. DC Squad 2 and a rotator also assisted with the operation.

The cause of the accident is currently unknown.
