Alexandria seeks climate volunteers for new EcoAmbassadors program

The city of Alexandria is partnering with EcoAction Arlington to launch a new volunteer training program aimed at mobilizing residents to take climate action in their neighborhoods.

The EcoAmbassadors program will train environmentally conscious volunteers to help their neighbors undertake personal actions that make homes and communities healthier and more livable, according to a press release issued Monday.

“Achieving our climate goals and advancing the mission of Eco-City Alexandria requires collective and direct action,” said Ryan Freed, Alexandria’s climate action officer. “EcoAmbassadors will be able to help neighbors across the city prioritize climate, together.”

The five-week training program runs from Oct. 1-29, with sessions held on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The curriculum centers on Alexandria’s Energy and Climate Change Action Plan, focusing on reducing energy use, home electrification, eco-friendly transportation and waste reduction.

Applications are open through Sept. 24 for candidates 16 and older. The program costs $110, which includes a background check for adults, but high school and college students participate for free. An early bird discount is available for applications submitted by Sept. 13, and needs-based waivers are offered.

The program builds on the 14-year legacy of the Energy Masters Program, which helped residents conserve energy and water in their homes. Volunteers commit to one year of service after completing training, participating in community outreach, presentations to civic groups and door-to-door information sharing.

“The new EcoAmbassadors program will accelerate opportunities for local residents to increase awareness about everyday activities they can do in their own homes that will make a tangible difference in our communities,” said Elenor Hodges, EcoAction Arlington’s executive director.

The program is jointly funded by Alexandria and Arlington County and managed by EcoAction Arlington and Virginia Cooperative Extension. Training will be conducted virtually and at an Arlington location.
