Housing Alexandria celebrates 4 years of community garden events

Housing Alexandria recently hosted its annual summer garden celebrations at two Alexandria community garden sites, marking four years of community engagement and nearly a decade of urban food production.

The events took place at The Station at Potomac Yard and The Bloom at Braddock, featuring garden tours, family activities, refreshments, mural painting, and a petting zoo. Residents, volunteers, and staff gathered to celebrate the organization’s commitment to urban agriculture and food equity.

Housing Alexandria now operates three active garden sites that collectively produce about 2,500 pounds of fresh vegetables annually, providing nutritious food to more than 250 residents. The gardens grow diverse produce, including eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce, basil, carrots, bell peppers, chili peppers, cucumbers, and green beans, using sustainable practices.

“Housing Alexandria’s gardens are about more than just food,” said Jon Frederick, CEO of Housing Alexandria. “They’re about community, sustainability and equity. These events gave us a chance to celebrate the volunteers, residents and staff who make this initiative thrive year after year.”

The nonprofit established its first community garden in 2016. The three sites — The Bloom, The Station, and Lacy Court — represent the organization’s broader mission to create stable, affordable housing alongside strong, connected neighborhoods with access to healthy food and green spaces.

Housing Alexandria is a nonprofit community developer based in Alexandria that provides affordable housing paired with essential services and resources to enhance the quality of life and equity for individuals and families in the city.
