City of Alexandria services to relocate ahead of major city hall renovation

The City of Alexandria will begin relocating city services and employee offices in August as part of preparations for major renovations to City Hall and Market Square, officials announced.

The relocations will continue through the end of 2025, with renovations set to begin in January 2026. More than 400 city employees will move from their existing offices to temporary or permanent spaces throughout Alexandria.

The first move is scheduled for Aug. 21, when the Office of Housing will temporarily relocate from 421 King St., Suite 215 to 100 N. Pitt St., Fourth Floor.

On Sept. 25, the Department of Finance’s Real Estate Division will temporarily move from City Hall to 100 N. Pitt St., Second Floor. The Real Estate Board of Equalization will continue to hold meetings at City Hall through the end of 2025.

The following day, Sept. 26, several Code Administration divisions currently located at City Hall will permanently relocate to 4850 Mark Center Dr., Second Floor. Those divisions include Plan Review, New Construction, Property Maintenance and Administrative Services.

City officials said City Hall, an Alexandria landmark, is well over 100 years old, while Market Square has served as a civic gathering place since the city’s founding in 1749. Both facilities need significant updates to repair aging building components, improve technology and accessibility, enhance security and bolster community engagement.

During the transition, some services will be offered virtually or temporarily paused. The Office of Housing will be available by phone at 703.746.4990 from Aug. 20 to 27, with no in-person walk-ins during that time. The office will be fully operational at its new location starting Aug. 28.

The Department of Finance’s Real Estate services will be available virtually only from Sept. 24 to 26. Appointment-only services will resume Sept. 29 at the new location. Residents can call 703.746.4646 or email [email protected] to schedule appointments.

Code Administration will have no appointments available for Plan Review or Administrative services Sept. 25 to 26, though New Construction and Property Maintenance services will continue as usual. All services will fully resume Sept. 29.

Additional moves will be announced in the coming months, officials said.
