🚨 You need to know

The historic Tall Ship Providence has returned to its Alexandria home port after several months of critical repairs at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, according to an update from the Tall Ship Providence Foundation.

The vessel completed what organizers called “one of the smoothest transits Providence has had since first arriving in Alexandria” during a 38-hour journey that began June 27. The crew navigated through the Chesapeake Bay and up the Potomac River, spotting dolphins and rays along the way.

“Providence is back home, and we are thrilled that our journey went off without a hitch,” the foundation said in a Tuesday update posted to its website.

The ship underwent structural and rigging repairs at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum while the foundation continues fundraising efforts to cover the work costs. Officials hope to complete fundraising by year’s end.

Currently, Providence operates under a “laid up” Certificate of Inspection status while Captain Dillon works with the Coast Guard to certify the vessel as a dockside attraction. The foundation expects this status to continue for several seasons until additional rigging projects are completed.

The organization will host a summer celebration Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at the ship’s dock, featuring live music by The Sunday Set, food and drinks. The event will launch the foundation’s annual Field Trip Program fundraiser, which aims to host more than 1,500 students from local Title I schools during the 2025-2026 school year at no charge.

Tickets cost $40 and are limited to 130 people. The foundation previously raised $292 during a July 20 fireworks viewing party for Alexandria’s 276th birthday celebration.

The organization plans to develop new programming focused on community events and dockside tours, including free self-guided deck tours and $15 guided tours. The foundation’s Living History Tours continue Saturday mornings, with field trips, birthday parties and scout programs planned.

Kathy Seifert, executive director of the Tall Ship Providence Foundation, said proceeds and donations from Thursday’s event support the organization’s mission.
