State Department Federal Credit Union unveils renovated Alexandria branch in 90th anniversary celebration

State Department Federal Credit Union marked a significant milestone this week, celebrating 90 years of service while debuting its newly renovated Alexandria branch as a centerpiece of the commemorative festivities.

The credit union held its anniversary celebration on Tuesday, July 8, bringing together members, community leaders, and employees at its headquarters location at 1630 King Street. The branch renovation represents SDFCU’s continued investment in Alexandria, where the institution is also headquartered.

SDFCU’s origins trace back to eight employees of the United States Department of State who secured the credit union’s charter 90 years ago. What began as a small financial cooperative has evolved into a global institution serving more than 90,000 members worldwide, with assets exceeding $2.9 billion.

“This is more than a celebration of our past; it’s a renewed commitment to the future,” said Board of Directors Chair Marlene Schwartz during the event. “Today’s re-opening of our Alexandria branch symbolizes our continued investment in our members and our community.”

The renovated King Street headquarters features enhanced technology and modern design elements aimed at providing more seamless, personalized service to members. While SDFCU now operates six branch locations in the D.C. Metro and Northern Virginia area, plus one in North Charleston, South Carolina, the Alexandria headquarters remains the heart of its operations and identity as a trusted financial partner for the region.

The credit union’s membership has diversified significantly from its State Department origins, now including members from various affiliate Select Employee Groups. SDFCU offers a comprehensive range of financial products, including savings accounts, mortgages, credit cards, auto loans, share certificates, and investment services, along with specialized resources like home-buying assistance, scholarship opportunities, and debt counseling.

President and CEO Jim Hayes emphasized the credit union’s mission-focused approach during his remarks. “Our members make a difference in the world every day. We take pride in making a difference for them,” Hayes said. “As we look ahead, we’re focused on continued innovation, stronger financial tools, and even more ways to help our members thrive — wherever life takes them.”

The anniversary celebration highlighted SDFCU’s remarkable transformation from eight founding State Department employees to a full-service financial institution serving members across the globe. The King Street headquarters renovation is part of SDFCU’s broader strategy to modernize its facilities while maintaining the personalized service that has defined the institution throughout its nine-decade history.

As the credit union enters its next decade, leadership emphasized its commitment to serving members with integrity, empowering through education, and growing alongside its diverse, worldwide membership base.
