Alexandria Sheriff’s Office opens applications for fall community academy

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for its fall Community Academy, providing residents and city workers with a free opportunity to learn about local law enforcement operations.

Sheriff Sean Casey announced Thursday (July 10) that the program will run for four consecutive Saturday mornings, from September 6 to September 27, with sessions held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Applications are due by Friday, August 29; however, officials warn that space is limited.

The Community Academy provides participants with an inside look at the Sheriff’s Office through a combination of presentations and hands-on learning experiences. The curriculum covers four main areas: jail operations, inmate services and programs, judicial operations, and public safety services.

Beyond classroom instruction, attendees will receive behind-the-scenes tours of both the Alexandria Adult Detention Center and the Alexandria Courthouse, along with opportunities to participate in interactive activities.

The program is open to anyone who lives or works in Alexandria at no cost. Those interested in applying can visit www.alexandriava.gov/academies for more information and to submit their application.

The Sheriff’s Community Academy aims to strengthen the relationship between the Sheriff’s Office and the community by providing transparency into the agency’s operations and its role in maintaining public safety in Alexandria.
