The City of Alexandria’s Community Cookout, initially scheduled for the Andrew Adkins Public Housing Community tonight (July 9), has been moved indoors to the Charles Houston Recreation Center due to a thunderstorm weather advisory, city officials announced on Wednesday.
The event, organized by the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA), will take place at 6 p.m. at the Charles Houston Recreation Center located at 901 Wythe Street. Residents can expect a variety of free activities, including games, giveaways, and opportunities to connect with neighbors and learn about city services and programs.
Tonight’s cookout marks the second-to-last event in this summer’s series, with the final cookout scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, at The Acclaim Apartments at 346 S. Whiting Street.
The Community Cookout series originated as an initiative by two dedicated staff members from the Department of Recreation to enhance program participation and expand outreach to two of Alexandria’s most underserved communities. What started as a small departmental project has grown into a major community initiative.
Today, more than 50 city agencies and nonprofit organizations participate in the cookouts, which have reached and served over 20,000 residents. The City Manager’s Office now supports the events.
Despite the change to an indoor venue, organizers encourage residents to attend tonight’s event to enjoy the community gathering and learn about the wide range of services available through city agencies.
