Old Town sewer upgrade set for July, Wilkes Street Tunnel to close briefly

Alexandria is preparing to replace the old sewer pipes on the 500 block of South Lee Street. The project aims to boost capacity and prevent backups by replacing existing 6-inch and 8-inch pipes with larger 10-inch ones between Wilkes and Gibbon streets.

Set to kick off in July, this $250,000 upgrade is expected to take four months. City officials will share details at a community meeting for the South Lee Street Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project at City Hall on June 25, with a Zoom option available for those who cannot attend in person.

Pre-Construction Community Meeting

  • Wednesday, June 25, 2025 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • City Hall, Sister Cities Conference Room (301 King Street)
  • Virtual attendance via Zoom is also available. Registration is required. Please complete the following form to receive the meeting link and passcode: zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_tpJCO6KnQ4-Ko26bRb9H0A

According to a preview of the Presentation that will be given at that meeting, the work will cause some disruptions, including lane closures, parking restrictions, and temporary sidewalk detours along South Lee Street. Crews will dig up the street in short sections, reopening lanes and covering trenches at the end of each day.

Construction is scheduled from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

Residents should expect brief interruptions to their sewer service as homes are connected to the new pipes. The city promises to give advance notice to affected properties.

The project also includes replacing some curb and gutter, with plans to fully restore and repave South Lee Street from curb to curb once everything’s done.

One key impact to note: the Wilkes Street Tunnel will be closed for a day or two while crews connect the new sewer pipe to an existing manhole. Detour signs will be posted at both ends of the tunnel.
