Alexandria City Council to consider transportation funding, hospital support, and lease extensions for Torpedo Factory artists

The Alexandria City Council will address a wide range of issues at its upcoming legislative meeting on Tuesday (May 27), including transportation funding requests, financial support for Inova Alexandria Hospital, and lease extensions for artists at the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

The meeting, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., will take place in the Council Chamber at 301 King Street. Participants can participate in person or remotely via Zoom.

Before discussing the main agenda, the Council will issue proclamations to recognize two important observances: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Sex Education Month.

Following these recognitions, Council members will provide oral reports on various boards, commissions, and committees, including the ARHA Redevelopment Work Group, Visit Alexandria Board of Governors, and the Alexandria Gang Prevention Task Force.

A significant portion of the meeting will focus on the Council’s 2025-2027 priorities initiatives, with updates on the strategic plan framework and work plan.

Among the action items requiring roll-call votes, the Council will consider one-year lease extensions for artists and arts organizations at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. The extensions range from September 30, 2026 through September 30, 2028.

The Council will also review a grant application seeking funding from the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women to support the city’s Sexual Assault Center and Domestic Violence Program.

Federal funding priorities appear on the agenda as well, with consideration of a resolution affirming the City of Alexandria’s priorities for federal funding opportunities and requesting support from the Congressional delegation.

One of the individual action items involves a request to release Fiscal Year 2025 contingent reserve funds of $490,575 allocated for Inova Alexandria Hospital. The Council will review supporting documents, including a City Manager memo, Inova’s 2024 Community Report, and a PowerPoint presentation.

Transportation funding takes center stage with a resolution for submission to the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority for regional transportation funding under the FY 2030 program. This item requires a roll-call vote and includes several attachments detailing the funding request and endorsement letters.

The meeting will conclude with a review of the City Council schedule, including a look-ahead calendar and the official City Council schedule.

The meeting will begin with a Landmark Community Development Authority Board Meeting, which includes approving minutes from a January 2024 meeting and reviewing a 2024 assessment report.

A closed session is also on the agenda for consultation with legal counsel regarding actual or probable litigation and specific transportation and federal contract-related legal matters.
