Brandon Byrd wants to refocus your attention, if only for just a few minutes.

As life around the D.C. area intensifies over politics, the economy and the summer, Byrd says his frozen custard provides customers with an escape. Starting Thursday (May 22), Byrd is reopening Goodie’s Frozen Custard and Treats at 200 Commerce Street in Old Town.

“With talks of war, inflation and tariffs and everything under the sun, people want a little escapism,” Byrd told ALXnow. “Just for this 15 minutes, focus on how good this custard is, or this banana pudding.”

Goodies officially opened its doors to the public in the 1930s-era ice house at 200 Commerce Street over Memorial Day weekend in 2021. The shop is now until Labor Day and sells vanilla bean and chocolate, with customers choosing from a myriad of toppings. Snacks include rum cake, banana pudding, cinnamon rolls and doughnuts.

Byrd said that the shop has opened sporadically throughout the year on days with great weather, but that Memorial Day weekend has always been his official seasonal reopening. This year, Byrd is partnering with Awcherry Coffee, an Ethiopian food truck that serves coffee and snacks. Also, you will see his custard truck, Gigi, at a number of events, like the City birthday celebration on the waterfront in July.

“I’ve always wanted to work with a coffee concept,” Byrd said. “It’s very complementary to what we serve, and the Awcherry truck will be in open at 9 a.m. in our driveway, a few hours before we open.”

The shop will be open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., or whenever they sell out. Byrd says that the public should follow the latest for the frozen custard shop on its Instagram page.
