Alexandria City Council honored its emergency medical services (EMS) providers at its Legislative Meeting on Tuesday (May 13) with a special proclamation for Emergency Medical Services Week, which runs from May 18 to 24, 2025.
During the meeting, Mayor Alyia Gaskins and the Alexandria City Council declared the week “Emergency Medical Services Week.”
Councilman Abdel-Rahman Elnoubi read a proclamation, highlighting the crucial role of EMS in the community. This year’s theme is “We Care. For Everyone.”
The proclamation emphasized that EMS is an essential public service. It pointed out that the success of the emergency medical services system relies on teamwork and dedication from Alexandria’s Public Safety Communications Officers, Paramedics, Firefighters, and EMTs, along with their partners across various sectors.
The Alexandria Fire Department’s EMS providers are available 24/7 and are committed to ongoing training and education. The department has also expanded into mobile medical care, also known as community paramedicine, to help citizens who need community health resources.
Fire Chief Felipe Hernandez Jr. expressed his gratitude, saying, “I want to thank you for this opportunity to recognize the great work that the men and women of the Alexandria Fire Department do for this community every day.”
Mayor Gaskins added, “Everyone who talks about the men and women at the AFD only speaks of them in the highest regard. I thank you for always representing us with the highest character.”
The mayor also acknowledged the department’s recent achievements, including gaining accreditation and implementing new initiatives.
The proclamation encourages the community to observe EMS Week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities to honor these essential workers.
