Alexandria is asking residents their thoughts on proposed changes to Edsall Road and Yoakum Parkway. The city wants to make these areas safer and easier to navigate for everyone.
The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services has developed some initial designs based on community input and traffic data. Last fall, over 100 residents shared their concerns about speeding, a lack of bike lanes, and tricky pedestrian crossings.
For Yoakum Parkway, the city is considering using extra road space for bike lanes, adding safer crosswalks, and possibly removing some parking spots. On Edsall Road, they’re looking at adding a center turn lane and lowering the speed limit from 35 to 25 mph.
Safety is a big concern. Between June 2019 and June 2024, Edsall Road saw 104 crashes, including 14 involving pedestrians or cyclists. More than a third of these accidents resulted in injuries, with three being severe.
Want to weigh in? You can check out the project presentation and share your thoughts through an online form until May 26. The project team will use this feedback to finalize plans for Yoakum Parkway and continue exploring options for Edsall Road.
The Edsall Road and Van Dorn Street intersection is being looked at separately as part of another safety project.
